2022.01.19 08:40 Hastener_Of_Days The Guerilla Skeptics hauled before ArbCom

Hell must have frozen over, because the infamous Guerilla Skeptics group has finally caught the attention of Wikipedia's internal governance system, at the only level that really matters, the Arbitration Committee.
The existence of the GS group, founded by Susan Gerbic, has been an open secret on Wikipedia for years. Organising in private over Facebook, and with most members hiding both their real life identities and their Wikipedia user ids, masquerading on the site as any other random Wikipedia pseudonym, they ostensibly exist to push back against the forces of "woo", who are understandably highly motivated to corrupt Wikipedia by editing it to promote their scams and conspiracy theories.
With the advantage of being able to coordinate in private without anyone on Wikipedia knowing these people are acting as a group, it is if course suspected that GS breaks any number of realy quite important Wikipedia rules. Rules against canvassing, rules against vote stacking, rules against using blocking powers in your own interests, and rules that say you must declare any relevant conflicts of interest.
The rules that essentially ensure that Wikipedia is a level playing field for all editors, equal under the wiki law, given the same opportunity to propose and defend their edits as anyone else, and letting the benign force of consensus to result in the best edit for Wikipedia.
The GS group naturally denies breaking any rules, but they otherwise claim to have had huge influence, recruiting hundreds of members, training them in how to edit, and affecting thousands of articles. And it can hardly be argued they haven't had an effect.
The way the terms "pseudoscience" and "fringe" are used on Wikipedia, is now akin to jewtagging. It's really quite disgusting. In the Wikipedia coverage of any of these areas, most notably Homeopathy, readers are treated like children, and are quite literally beaten over the head and forced to a conclusion. This is distinct from the original Wikipedia model of neutrality, where you simply present the facts, in due proportion to their reliability, and trust the reader to come to the right conclusion.
Perhaps under the influence of these Red Guards, the whole Wikipedia community, such as it even exists, seemingly long ago abandoned any idea that Wikipedia is neutral and the simple editorial process of balancing reliable sources (which is categorically not the same as "teaching the controversy") would result in articles that don't promote woo, or indeed, give it any credence at all.
This is why Larry Sanger hates Wikipedia now, because drafting the original and now long forgotten neutrality protocols was his primary contribution to Wikipedia. They still exist, they are just interpreted in a way that was never intended.
The sheer arrogance of Gerbic and her disgusting collective of dirty mole people, is that they somehow have a superior claim to being the real, true, Wikipedia editors. That they need to operate in the shadows because the system as constituted, is insufficient, and the forces of woo, too powerful. They cast themselves as the only ones that really care about the integrity of the encyclopedia, and thus, are willing to do whatever it takes to win this epic battle for the fertile real estate of Wikipedia.
It has taken a while, but this level of cowardly hypocrisy finally seems to be pissing off the editors who operate out in the open, and willingly accept the disadvantages of Wikipedia's open editing model and arguably over generous indulgence of disruptive actors, as the price to be paid if you want people to really believe an encyclopedia written by randoms is possible.
Transparency in its decision making, is all that Wikipedia has ever had in terms of differentiating itself from, say, Brittanica, who can fight the forces of woo simply by not letting those people have a hand in the editing process, and standing behind a trust in its professionalism. No surprise then, that the Britannica article on Homeopathy treats readers as adults, and contains no jewtagging and forces no conclusions. Just the facts, in due proportion. The underhand methods of a secret group operating as a parallel editor community undermines what little benefit the Wikipedia model has over Brittanica, namely transparency, even if they claim to be doing it for the good of Wikipedia.
By design, nobody can check what the GS group does except the group itself, so nobody not in that group, is in any real position to say if they are operating in the best interests of Wikipedia. Not for nothing does a big part of the concerns with the group, based on what little can be deduced by connecting the dots, seems to be how they have perhaps tried to unduly promote and deploy publications they have a connection to, as Wikipedia's sources.
I am not confident this will go anywhere. It has the whiff of a sham to me, ironically. I don't think the Arbitration Committee have any intention of banning the Guerilla Skeptics, whatever the evidence, and I suspect this process will merely be an exercise in trying to officially endorse the position that while in theory, the existence of groups like GS is embarassing and detrimental, the fact you can't list all the specific harms done as a result of their private collusion, must mean they can't be all that bad.
If this was an investigation of a secret editing group trying to promote Homeopathy, the Arbitration Committee would, absolutely, leave no stone unturned, and condem the group in the strongest possible terms, with any and all evidence held up as significant and damning.
The reverse, not so much I fear. Wikipedia's innate systemic bias, in action. Perversely, there are Wikipedians who are quite proud that this is their truth. Those are the sort of morons who think Wikipedia being so easily accused of bias, can somehow be turned into a marketing claim.
Yes, we are biased against Homeopathy. Come join us! Absurd. Are you biased for or against the IRA? For or against Israel? For or against guns? For or against BLM? Not so easy to deploy their corrupted post Larry Sanger ideas of neutrality to the very areas where trust in your neutrality is an absolute must if you want to be taken seriously as a non-partizan reference work.
Maybe the GS group doesn't have huge sway in these general terms and the problem really is the wider systemic bias, but be in no doubt, one of the primary things the GS group seems to do, as the early discovery and evidence process shows, is try to harm real people.
This is supposedly the worst thing you can ever do on Wikipedia. Even if you only have a small membership, that can be enough to distort the Wikipedia editing model to turn the biographies of your perceived enemies into hit pieces, and those of your friends, into hagiographies.
The signs that the existence of the GS group and perhaps others really distorts Wikipedia's content and culture in some way, perhaps as much indirectly as directly, is all around. Much of its coverage of controversial topics simply doesn't even pass the smell test anymore, if it ever did.
Wikipedia is biased. That ironically used to be a fringe position, but now, perhaps precisely because of the hubris of Susan and her followers, it is now so screamingly obvious, it is being picked up by sources Wikipedia considers reliable, and thus cannot ignore. This sham may then simply be part of Wikipedia's answer to that bad press.
Naturally, don't be asking alleged Wikipedia critics Wikipediocracy, Gender Desk or Eric Barbour about any of this, they really don't have a clue, for various different reasons.

2022.01.19 08:40 JohnZwack Lifetime karma

Hey chummers We are starting our first shadowrun playthrough this weekend. I have my run all figured out, except for the karma. From previous experience in other games we play our characters for about one and a half years and like to progress our characters from nobody to legend. Can you help me figure out how much karma is needed for this progression? From this I would like to calculate how much karma I give out every evening. Thanks

I wanted to create a new character but I realised I completely missed Yoel of Londor questline so I can’t get the Black Dress from Yuria anymore.
The Black Veil is also in a spot of the Ringed City (I have the DLC but I’ve not reached that spot yet and this would save me a lot of time).
I can offer you my services as a Mule, I also have some rings that might interest you (Be warned tho, I just finished my first playtrough without doing the DLCs yet, but I do have some +3 rings I don’t use)

2022.01.19 08:40 florecillas How do you organize when it comes to taking out the trash and cleaning?

Hey! :) I'm just wondering how do you guys organize when it comes to taking out the trash, cleaning...
I live with 3 more persons (we are four), we clean once a week (each person cleans one different area of the apartment in rotations, so each week is different).
When one of those persons leaves (she has holidays, a trip or so) we clean her part because she's not here.
However, I left for four days and this week it was my turn (and this girls turn) to take out the trash. I took my trash before leaving (and cleaned) so that they wouldn't have to clean my part those days.
Thing is when I got back yesterday this is what I found.
I know this week it's also my turn to take out the trash, but since this isn't mine at all, should I take it out?
I'm asking because I know they will complain about it to me today, and I want to make sure I'm not crazy for thinking this is not my responsibility even if it was my turn this week. I mean, if it wasn't THAT nasty I would take it out, I just feel this is too much. I'm a bit overwhelmed to be honest, because they have been doing this since we started living together.

2022.01.19 08:40 nmrci Chair recommendations in Australia

I’m looking to upgrade my chair as I’m now doing a lot more wfh. My budget is $1000 AUD (I think most of the chairs in this price range end up in $500 USD price bracket). My main requirements are:
*Must be available in Australia, more precisely Brisbane. I don’t mind paying for domestic shipping *Must have mesh/ ventilated back. Mesh bottom is nice but not 100% required *Headrest would be nice, but I’d also be willing to sacrifice it if the chair goes a decent way up the back *Armrests are not strictly necessary, but if they aren’t adjustable then I want them to be easily removeable. *A good warranty is a must
So far I’ve found 3 promising options:
*Steelcase series 2 (although I’m not sure if they can actually ship to Brisbane) *Secretlab Neue chair *Haworth Fern
Which one should I go with? Are there any other options I should be considering?
